Die ursprüngliche Kraft der traditionellen Musik, die Raffinesse klassischer Kompositionen, die Energie der Rockmusik und die Reinheit von Bartóks Denken prägen die ungarische Band Söndörgő, eine der spannendsten, innovativsten und erfolgreichsten Gruppen der internationalen World-Music-Szene.

Als Söndörgő vor mehr als einem Vierteljahrhundert gegründet wurde, waren die Mitglieder noch Kinder und sind praktisch mit der Band aufgewachsen. Vier der fünf Mitglieder gehören derselben Musikerfamilie an: drei Brüder (Áron, Benjamin und Salamon Eredics) sowie ein Cousin (Dávid Eredics). Ihr musikalisches Fundament bildet das legendäre Vujicsics Ensemble, das seit fast fünfzig Jahren authentische südslawische Volksmusik spielt: Vater- und Onkelfiguren sowie weitere Musiker aus der Familie Eredics. Entsprechend den Idealen von Zoltán Kodály begann die musikalische Ausbildung der Mitglieder von Söndörgő bereits neun Monate vor ihrer Geburt. Sie sind mit den Wurzeln ihrer musikalischen Welt tief vertraut, bei Bedarf auch wissenschaftlich (alle vier Eredics-Mitglieder unterrichten an der Abteilung für Volksmusik der Budapester Musikakademie). Ihr eigentliches Interesse gilt jedoch nicht der Frage, was traditionelle Musik einst bedeutete, sondern was sie heute und morgen bedeuten kann.

Das Jahr 2024 markierte einen Wendepunkt in Söndörgős künstlerischer Laufbahn. Die Band veröffentlichte das wegweisende Album Gyezz mit dem international renommierten Jazzsaxophonisten Chris Potter. Das Album erhielt breite Anerkennung der Kritik, wurde mit vier Sternen in Jazzwise und Songlines ausgezeichnet und erreichte Platz 1 sowohl der World Music Charts Europe als auch der Songlines Top of the World Charts. Dieser künstlerische Aufschwung kulminierte 2025 im 30-jährigen Bestehen der Band, das durch die Ernennung zum „Ensemble der Saison“ im Müpa Budapest hervorgehoben wurde. In diesem Jubiläumsjahr veröffentlichte die Band das Album XXX und tourte ausgiebig durch Europa und Japan, darunter ein Auftritt auf der Weltausstellung in Osaka.

Die Jubiläumsfeierlichkeiten fanden ihren Abschluss mit einem ausverkauften Konzert im Müpa, im Rahmen einer dreiteiligen kuratierten Residenz in den Jahren 2025/2026, die die zentralen musikalischen Identitäten von Söndörgő widerspiegelt: Folk, Klassik und Jazz. Die Reihe umfasst Kooperationen mit herausragenden Gastkünstler:innen wie Márta Sebestyén, dem Balanescu Quartet sowie Michael League, Chris Bullock und Jay Jennings von Snarky Puppy und unterstreicht die genreübergreifende musikalische Vision der Band. Im Herbst 2026 wird Söndörgő eine Auswahl dieser Aufnahmen als Live-Album In Residence at Müpa veröffentlichen.

Parallel zur Residenz wurde Söndörgő für den Songlines Award als Bestes Album 2025 nominiert und für ein Showcase bei Classical:NEXT Budapest 2026 ausgewählt, was ihre wachsende internationale Präsenz sowohl in der klassischen Musik als auch in genreübergreifenden Szenen weiter unterstreicht. Nach drei Jahrzehnten redefiniert Söndörgő weiterhin südslawische und balkanische Musiktraditionen – nicht als starres Erbe, sondern als lebendige, sich weiterentwickelnde Inspirationsquelle.

The primordial nature of traditional music, the sophistication of classical compositions, the energies of rock music and the purity of Bartók's thinking characterize the Hungarian band Söndörgő, one of the most exciting, innovative and successful bands on the international world music scene.

When Söndörgő was formed more than a quarter of a century ago, the members were still children and practically grew up along with the band. Four of the five members are part of the same family of musicians: three brothers (Aaron, Benjamin and Salamon Eredics) and a cousin (David Eredics). Their spiritual backbone is the legendary Vujicsics Ensemble, which has been playing authentic South Slavic folk music for close to fifty years: father and uncle figures, along with other Eredics musicians. Thus, in accordance with Zoltán Kodály’s ideals, the musical education of the members of Söndörgő began nine months before their birth. They are deeply acquainted with the roots of their musical world, even in a scholarly way if necessary (all four Eredics members teach at the Department of Folk Music of the Budapest Academy of Music), but what they are truly interested in is not what traditional music once meant, but what it can mean today and tomorrow.

The year 2024 marked a pivotal turning point in Söndörgő’s artistic journey. The band released the transformative album Gyezz, featuring the internationally acclaimed jazz saxophonist Chris Potter. The album received widespread critical praise, earning four-star reviews from Jazzwise and Songlines, and reaching #1 on both the World Music Charts Europe and the Songlines Top of the World chart. This artistic momentum culminated in Söndörgő’s 30th anniversary in 2025, highlighted by their appointment as Ensemble of the Season at Müpa Budapest. During this milestone year, the band released the album XXX and toured extensively across Europe and Japan, including a performance at the World Expo in Osaka.

The anniversary celebrations concluded with a sold-out concert at Müpa, part of a three-part curated residency in 2025/2026 reflecting Söndörgő’s core musical identities: Folk, Classical, and Jazz. The series features collaborations with outstanding guest artists including Márta Sebestyén, the Balanescu Quartet, and Michael League, Chris Bullock, and Jay Jennings of Snarky Puppy, showcasing the band’s genre-crossing musical vision. In autumn 2026, Söndörgő will release a selection of recordings from this residency as the live album In Residence at Müpa.

Alongside the residency, Söndörgő received a Songlines Award nomination for Best Album 2025 and was selected for a showcase at Classical:NEXT Budapest 2026, further underlining their growing international presence across classical and cross-genre scenes. After three decades, Söndörgő continues to redefine South Slavic and Balkan musical traditions. Not as fixed heritage, but as a living, evolving source of inspiration.
